If there is one CD you get this year, make it this one.” - Max du Preez, columnist“...ja, no question about it - ‘Roger Lucey is back in from the cold’. A lovely mix of the old and the new and I’ve had your CD playing in my car virtually non-stop since I bought it.” - Paul Slabolepszy, playwright, actor“Big hearted, moving and luminous- Roger Lucey’s show was a true gem on the FLF programme this year, it would be a mistake to miss it.” - Jennifer Blane, Programme director, Franschoek Literary FestivalHow to Build a House in the MountainsHow to Build a House in the Mountains is a memoir as well as a live solo show featuring stories and songs inspired by the journey of consummate musician, wordsmith and former Durban native, Roger Lucey. Roger survived a covert security police campaign which destroyed his music career. He survived the drug addiction and disaffection which followed. He survived a decade and a half as a cameraman documenting the wars of Africa and Eastern Europe. Survival was not enough, though.Broken and despairing, he needed to find a way to reclaim his life and creativity. With no previous experience, but with a vague idea that the process might lead to healing, he set out to build a house in the mountains of the Breede River Valley during South Africa's first years of democracy. This is the remarkable story of that house and the path that led Roger out of the darkness of his past and back into the light of his music.“I’ve listened through several times now. It’s good. It’s very good. Recognizably the Lucey of yesteryear, but mature and full of depth and musical richness and matched by the extreme listenability of the lyrics. Bravo!” - John Maytham, Radio 702/Capetalk“And he has produced a most beautiful album. There are many, many musical influences, blending seamlessly into a coherent whole as Lucey contemplates life, love and hope with his haunting lyrics aided by collaborators from his early hell-raising Joburg days.” - Kevin Ritchie, Editor, The Star“Gently rolling country rhythms blend with gorgeous slide guitar as folk troubadour Roger Lucey reflects on everything from the tragedy of war to simply getting older, learning to forgive and taking a healthier path through life. Sometimes wistful, sometimes celebratory, the lyrics are those of a great survivor and master of reinvention.” - Glynis O’Hara, The Mail & Guardian
